Song Of The South DVD

Song of the South DVD

Is it possible to get the Song of The South DVD?

Some say the song of the south dvd will never be released in the United States. In what is being called a captivation to political correctness, Disney has stated, officially, that the Song of the South DVD will never be released.

Why, do you ask?

If you remember (and I was only about six or seven when I first saw Song of the South, and it wasn’t Song of the South DVD) I didn’t think much of it.

Some old guy singing with a bunch of cartoon characters. A rabbit too afraid to go into a bunch of bushes or something. A bunch of happy animals all learning to play with each other and not even notice the differences between black and white, let alone human and animal.

But apparently there were plenty of complaints. You see, the movie, and if there was a Song of the South DVD available, you could surely see the topic of the movie is surely controversial.

Or perhaps there were no complaints. Perhaps Disney is being overly cautious, in order to protect their brand. It’s not unheard of for a major corporation to be embarrassed when only a few crusaders embark on a mission to discredit them.

When you study the history of Disney movies, and sometimes members of the Disney movies club, you may get access to may a Disney movie that you would otherwise pass over. Of course when you consider the number of Disney DVD movies you might find, including Disney Pixar movies, and Disney classic movies or even new Disney movies, you’ll soon realize there are many reasons this is one of the most popular programs out there.

The movie takes place in the deep south, with slavery still in force. Uncle Remus, and all the other characters embodied the spirit of humanity that transcends racism and prejudice.

That is what Disney intended to show in the original Song of the South DVD, but alas we may never be able to see it again. Word is that there are some underground, converted copies.

However, racism, and slavery is a very painful memory to many Americans today, and perhaps Disney is right to withhold release of the Song of The South DVD. But with the Internet and global trade the way it is, there is certainly somewhere, someplace where we can purchase a Song of The South DVD.

I’ll keep you all updated, and make sure to check back often to see when the Song of the South DVD does become available.

I cannot understand why there should be any controversy over releasing this great film, it is absolute nonsense blaming racism and slavery etc! You could not get a closer film to the horrors of slavery than ROOTS and this is a film that is readily available on DVD and is shown regular on Sky!
Song of the South is a lovely, enjoyable film that I would love to show my grandchildren and their children alike for years to come!

You can buy a copy (unofficial) of the Song of the South DVD from mayancastledvd.net. The quality is pretty good. There are a couple other places, but I’ve heard the quality isn’t so good.

  6. Miss Von says:

You need to update your information. The Blacks portrayed in the movie were not slaves. As you can see in the movie Uncle Remus could leave the plantation when he wished. It took place after the Civil War.

We are going to Walt Disney world in October and are viewing all the ride related Disney movies before we go: Cinderella, Snow White, Winnie the Pooh etc. I ask you, how can you go on Splash Mountain without having seen Song of the South???

I haven’t seen it in 40 years but I remember the characters in that ride from that movie. I have gone on the Mayan site to order it, hope it is a good copy! Very curious to see what the hub bub is about, I only remember a nice black man who looked like a farmer signing zip a dee do da to a bunch of animals. I don’t recall seeing slaves, thinking of slaves, anything to do with slaves. I am wondering what I will think with “adult eyes” now?

Can I order this DVD from Australia

  10. Scotpond says:

Watching it with twin gr’ children age 4 1/2.
Have watched it a dozen times with 4 older
    Gr children.

Teach your kids history of blacks and fables.

Explain that the blacks are slaves, what slavery
is AND that slaves were often beaten and treated poorly.
    Notice bullying.

Look up the story of the Actor who played U Remus
    on Wikipedia.

Move on to Aesop’s fables and Roadrunner.

    • David says:

As mentioned by others, The Uncle Remus Stories were written AFTER the civil war, i.e. AFTER the slaves were freed. The movie’s storyline makes this clear.

You will also note how Walt Disney liked the Black actor who played Uncle Remus and helped both him and his family.

I bought a VHS copy of the Song Of The South ( in Australia LEGAL VERSION ) a few years ago they were selling DVD’s of it and silly me chose a VHS format instead and now I’m kicking myself !!! – - I’m gonna get my sister to copy ot to DVD as her Video recorder machine does that assuming there is no copyright on it to allow it to transfer successfully – but I want a copy of it on DVD bad enough – ( My sister can also have a copy as she loves this movie too ) – it was a real riot and has some wonderful lessons to be taught and learned – the part where Brer Bear goes looking for his ” Happy Place ” and gets stung by Bees still makes me double over with laughter – even at my age of 39 – man this was a good movie !!

  13. Bill Richards says:

i am 6 days older than this film being born november6th 1946.. I have no idea where I obtained it from but have a video of this film .. My grandkids who range from 4 years to 19 years all love to watch this movie along with me. So stupid to ban such a great film and hope one day it is on general release .

  14. Virginia O'Connor says:

Does anyone know the website where I can purchase the Australian Legal Version of Song of the South?

  15. RowMan says:

Song Of The South has still never been released by Disney on DVD anywhere in the world. The only officially released home video formats have been Betamax, VHS, and laserdisc, but the title has been “out-of-print” for many years now.

For those seeking a videotape that can be viewed in Australia, seek out the official UK release as that country has the same video standard (PAL). These tapes are still readily available on eBay and Amazon.
